Miliband to ‘double down’ on clean energy
Speaking in Parliament on the War in Iran and its consequences, on Thursday Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said:
“The lesson of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the lesson of recent days, is that our mission is the only route to greater energy independence for Britain and we will double down on it. Every solar panel we install, every wind turbine we put up, and every nuclear power station we build makes us more secure as a country and protects families and businesses from those kinds of energy shocks.
This Government have learned the lessons of the geopolitical instability we have seen and continue to see. In an unstable world, we will keep driving for energy sovereignty and abundance with clean home-grown power. We will not gamble with the British people’s money at the fossil fuel casino, and ignore the lessons of the past.”

What the “Rooftop Revolution” Means for You
The UK government has just signaled a massive acceleration in our transition to renewable energy. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has “doubled down” on the mission to achieve clean power by 2030, promising a “rooftop revolution” that aims to move the UK away from the volatility of international gas markets.
At Naked Solar, we’ve been championing this transition since 2010. While the headlines focus on national targets, our focus remains on what this means for your home and your energy independence.
The Big News: A £2 Billion “Rooftop Revolution”
The government has announced a significant shift in how they support homeowners. For the first time, up to £2 billion is being set aside to subsidise low-interest loans for solar panels and battery storage.
Our Take: High upfront costs have always been the biggest barrier for households wanting to go green. By providing accessible financing, the government is finally recognising that residential solar isn’t just a “nice to have”—it’s a critical part of the UK’s national security and economic strategy.
Solar as Standard for New Homes
Miliband also confirmed the forthcoming Future Homes Standard, which will mandate solar panels on new-build properties.
Our Take: We’ve long argued that building homes without solar in 2024 is like building them without windows. However, we caution homeowners that “standard” builder-grade installs often lack the bespoke optimisation that maximizes ROI. Whether it’s a new build or a retrofit, the quality of the components and the precision of the design (something we pride ourselves on at Naked Solar) make the difference between a system that “works” and one that truly performs.
Why “Impartiality” Matters Now More Than Ever
With the government pushing for 47GW of solar capacity by 2030, the market is going to be flooded with new products and installers.
As an award-winning, Certified B Corp, Naked Solar remains 100% impartial. We don’t take commissions from manufacturers. Our role in this “Clean Energy Sprint” is to ensure that our customers in the South West aren’t just getting any solar system, but the right system for their specific roof, orientation, and energy usage.
The Naked Solar Verdict
The government’s “Clean Power 2030” plan is ambitious, and the shift toward lower electricity costs to encourage battery and solar adoption is a win for the consumer.
However, policy is only half the battle. The real “revolution” happens on your roof. If you’re looking to get ahead of the 2030 curve and protect your household from future energy price spikes, now is the time to look at a bespoke, high-performance system.
