Powering Through Power Cuts: Steve’s Solar Barn near Bath

For Steve, solar was never just about lower bills. It was about independence: keeping his property running whatever happens on the grid, and relying on it as little as possible.

With 22 SunPower panels on the roof of his American-style barn and a Sigenergy battery system behind them, Steve’s property in Frome, just outside Bath, is now as close to self-sufficient as he can make it.

Steve’s goal was clear from the start: to be as off-grid as possible. A power cut shouldn’t mean his property grinds to a halt, so he wanted a system that would keep things running when the grid goes down.

That meant generating as much of his own energy as he could, and storing it so it’s there when he needs it most.

Why Steve Chose Naked Solar

Steve set out to find the most trusted installer in the South West. As a solar installer for Bath and the surrounding area with a long track record of high-quality customer reviews, Naked Solar stood out.

For a system built around self-sufficiency, Steve needed confidence that the design, the products and the installation would all be done right.

Steve’s Solar System

Design Expertise: Steve’s American-style barn has a large, south-facing roof, ideal for solar. Our design team used 3D design software to make the most of every bit of usable roof space, giving Steve a clear picture of his system before a single panel went up (shown below).

Naked Solar’s design team produced a bespoke solar report for Steve to make a fully informed decision on which system was right for him

Solar Panels: Steve chose 22x SunPower P7 panels, filling the south-facing roof to maximise generation, with a sleek all-black look and a best-in-class warranty.

Battery Storage:Steve opted for Sigenergy SigenStor with 27.12kWh of storage. Steve preferred not to go with Tesla, so he compared Sigenergy closely with the Tesla Powerwall 3 and found it matched everything he was looking for, from storage capacity to backup power.

The Impact: Energy Independence and Peace of Mind

In the past couple of months, Steve was without grid power and the system was really put to the test. His property kept running on his Sigenergy battery, which is exactly what he installed it for.

Day to day, Steve has also seen significant savings on his energy bills. But for Steve, the real benefit runs deeper.

With energy prices and global events as unpredictable as ever, being as energy independent as possible gives him peace of mind. His panels generate, his battery stores, and his property keeps running.

“In the current global market, being as independent as possible and having that peace of mind is what matters most to me.

When we were without power for nearly 12 hours recently, the batteries just kept us going.”
